Losing our bearings

Living in a country with a completely different set of national holidays throws off our calendar sense for the USA.  Only at the end of Monday here did we realize it was Memorial Day- the whole weekend passed here without a single clue that America was celebrating a major national holiday.

What’s more pressing on our minds is Dragon Boat Festival next weekend. It will be our chance over here for a three day weekend!

    Hi JM and Liz.

My name is Jeremiah, and I’m a 33-year-old American on the verge of moving to China along with my girlfriend, Missy. We also decided to have an adventure abroad and set about making it happen! Missy and I found your blog, and we find it interesting and fairly informative about what awaits us on the trip. Anyway, to get to the point, we were recently advised by a friend who lived in Changchun for 2 years that we might enjoy living in Nanjing, that it was a more culturally interesting place than the industrial north. We’d be attempting to find work as ESL teachers (I am a journalist and Missy works in theatre and marketing), and I thought I’d contact you both in the hope of possibly meeting fellow Americans, but also for a bit of advice on Nanjing as possible place to teach English. We’ve been told be a few friends who have taught in China that it’s as simple as finding a city you like, moving there and finding teaching jobs. Have you run into anyone who’s managed this feat?

Thanks in advance, and keep posting – we’re enjoying it.
    -Jeremiah and Missy
